Are you feeling Pain Purchasing a Product? 7 tips to overcome your Pain
Are you feeling Pain purchasing a Product? Are you Confused? Do you keep changing your mind? Are you feeling under pressure?
Buying a Product, especially one which is an expensive investment for your hobby or business is not something which should be done lightly – and there is a process to work through, which will take you from feeling like the poor man below, to being Comfortable and Confident about what you are about to spend your money on.
Feel the Pain Purchasing a Product !
- not sure what you want
- whether it will do the job you want it to
- whether it works
- whether you’re investing in the right product
- whether you have the right skills to use it
- whether you can afford it
- whether you should invest anyway
- how many other accessories do you need to buy for it to work
- can you build on this as you learn to move your project / business forward
My partner and I run our own Business from home, retailing Astronomy equipment, telescopes, cameras etc etc. This morning I was listening to a conversation Bernard was having with a customer (he always puts the phone on speaker!). The customer had such pain in his voice I wanted to hug him and hit him in equal measures. He wanted a telescope – with some accessories, but of course there were several options, and he’d bought one before (obviously with bad advice, because it didn’t do what he wanted) – he hadn’t given much thought to what he wanted to do with it and what his imaging needs might be, so he hadn’t actually thought about what he wanted it to do or how much it would cost – and the real pain seemed to be that he didn’t actually understand much about it at all.
We travelled this journey with him – and he was luck he’d phoned us since Bernard knows more about astronomy imaging than probably any other Retailers, so …………….. 40 minutes later – He went away, having had a thorough grilling on what he wanted, lots of advice giving him KNOWLEDGE – his plan made for what he needed to start with to achieve his goals, a package of products to buy first, order and delivery details, and places to go to help with his learning curve – and of course, if he has issues along the way, he can call Bernard for advice.
After 10 minutes, he phoned back with his credit card details – he had gone through the Buying Pain and was comfortable and in that place of Confidence to Buy.
Buy Without Pain
I also (as you know) run my Online Business, and it struck me listening to this customer how, in any situation, Buying is Buying – and even though my business involves products for training and marketing your business, the buying process is absolutely KEY in making the right product purchases. I’ve really messed up at times, and have spent crazy money-making rash decisions – but now I have learnt to temper my impulses and enthusiasm for everything promising me fast and easy results and a short-cut to my dreams. It’s about choosing the Products that can start your business (create your baseline) / enhance your brand or presence/ educate and help your personal growth/ and propel your marketing to the world – Wherever you are on your Business Curve – keep your eyes and ears open – but Attract the products YOU NEED – not the ones other people want to sell you – be responsible for your actions and purchases.
My 7 Tips for Overcoming the Pain Purchasing a Product
- Don’t Buy in Pain, or confusion – and do not buy on impulse, do not get diverted by Bonuses or hype.
- Get your Knowledge first – have a clear plan of what you want to do with the product
- Be sure WHAT you are buying – do your research, including asking those who you trust for their opinion on its suitability for you and your Business – if you are purchasing from them, they should be asking you questions to see if it will be a good fit for you
- Allocate time after your Purchase to learn how to use it, or it will never help you
- Make a Business Decision to Buy – Be Confident and Comfortable with your Decision
- Take Responsibility for your product Yourself – Learn your way to Success
- USE IT and Make a Difference – Prove it’s Worth and Share your Knowledge with your blog readers, your fans, groups, email subscribers and your team. Even if one person learns something from you – that is giving value and Success.

Great post Jacs! I totally agree with your 7 points and to my mind the most important ones are #1 and #7- Not feeling pressurized to buy any products and then if you do buy it then make full use of it to make a difference in your life/business.

thanks Sabine for commenting and for picking out your most important points – its interesting to hear other perspectives on this purchasing process, which we all go through!!

I so agree with your suggestions here. There are so many great products available and many not so great. Buying on impulse is not good and I have done it before. Researching, especially for weight loss, supplements, skincare, etc is a very good idea.
When it comes to researching a business, that is just as important.
Beverly Monical recently posted..How To Release The Fear and Do It Anyway
thanks Beverly – research is key, it never used to be one of my strong points – but I’ve learnt the hard way!! and there is always so much to choose from (buying anything), and as you say some great, and some not – luckily we have a great network whom we can trust to share their knowledge if we pose a question

Such a great post because you bring to light what a lot of us have experienced at least once in our life….The Pain of Purchasing! Ugh. When I get a sales person who is knowledgeable about the product, it builds my confidence, especially if I do not know much about the product I am buying. I appreciate when the person who is selling me something has done the research for me. I am even more happy when I go out and do some research and the person who is selling to me had the same information to validate my purchasing goals. Cheers to helpful sales leaders!
Spot on Suzanne! Because we are both buyers and sales leaders in our Businesses – we understand the situation – it is all about being a genuine person and giving confidence, value and research as part of our sales process. Thanks for adding your thoughts here

Hello Jacs, I really like what you are saying here and the 7 points are right on target. Also it’s a great reminder for me and probably many other marketers and consumers that it is never a good idea to buy under pressure or while under an emotion of the moment. Asking questions and making sure we can use the products we buy is key…and sometimes we fall in the trap of buying in an impulse. Either way i love what you say about taking responsibility…Great topic!
thank you Nathalie – I have to learn from my own advice! But as you say – using the Products we buy is essential if they are to make a difference to our lives (which is usually the idea behind a purchase!)- and I feel taking the responsibility to learn how to use them is key, especially in these days of technology – nothing seems to work out of the box!

Great tips! I am big on doing research and comparision shopping before I make any major purchases, but if I’m still waffling even after that I’ll write about the pros and cons in my trusty journal and that usually does the trick.

hi Marquita – Big Smiles to you – pleased to hear there are some people out there who actually do their research!!!
Brilliant idea to use a journal to collect and compare pros and cons – I’ll remember that

Great post Jaq’s! I am a researcher so usually end up with products I want and that are right for me. However, I have made impulse buys with coaching that have not been right for me so I should follow these tips with that right?
Louise Edington recently posted..Why Love: Unsolicited?
hi Louise – I think we should follow some format, even when purchasing services like coaching – I also made a wrong decision on a coach, and she was recommended by a friend. I am still positive about personal recommendations, but we are all different and have different issues, so I have come to the conclusion that one should consider these points on all purchases – it’s about really identifying what it is exactly that we need – which could be where friends come in to bounce around those issues and find out what it is we’re looking for. I feel we won’t get it right all the time, but that’s the learning curve, it’s actually about self respect and always wanting and looking to obtain the best for ourselves – lessons I’m still learning!!
thanks for sharing your words Louise

I have felt the pain of buying so many times its not funny and mostly by things I have purchased on-line. You’ve got to sign up now or the price with double, etc. Taking the time to learn what you purchase is key and probably the biggest reason I have pain from a purchase or two. Was thinking this morning that I really need to figure out why I bought in to a particular program!
Great post!

Gratitude Coach
Big Smile Jean – I think we’ve all been there (me for sure!) – and it’s not easy starting on the internet – there’s so much to learn and so many people shouting that their product will solve all your problems!
Best to make a map of what you’re doing and where you’re going and identify what it is that you think you need (gaps in knowledge and actual tools that do things) and work through the 7 tips – help from others can give you pointers too – It’s all a learning process – and that’s valuable knowledge too

Great tips! I remember a few months back when an SEO company tried to pressure me into buying their services. They couldn’t understand why I was not going to make a decision on impulse, after talking with them for 15 minutes. Of course, while I was talking to the sales person, I googled the company and found out some negative info. As an Internet marketer, I try to treat my prospects like grown-up people, not idiots like the person trying to sell me her SEO services!
Brilliant example Dana! any pressure from a company should ring alarm bells – we must be smart like you, and follow our instincts if we are not 100% happy.
Like you, the best way forward as a business owner is to treat our customers and prospects with respect, and be honest as to whether there is a match:)
thanks so much for adding your comment Dana,

Hi Jacs
What a refreshing article! I am so happy to see a traditional sales technique written about. This is something that has been taught in sales since the beginning of time, and works very well. If you can identify where the pain is in your prospect, you can help them through it. Taking time with them, and allowing them to work through their fears will save you from a sale going backwards on you later. It’s much better to anchor a person solidly at the start. They will value their relationship with you, and look to you as an authority and a friend who CARES SINCERELY.
Laura Morris recently posted..Is FEAR of Talking to Your Circle of Influence COSTING You Money?
thank you Laura – it is something I feel strongly about, and am always happy to honestly answer questions to a purchaser, whether it’s a product or business purchase – if it helps them to come to a decision. It is the root of exceeding expectations for your customers – the way I like to be in Business – and I know you are too Laura

Wow, what a great article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your husband drilling down into what the needs and wants were before the sale. That’s what everyone needs to learn !

Hi Jacs
It is so true what you say, you 7 tips are a great reminder to take your time and think about what you want and need for your business.
I am sure we have all been sold things on the back of the hype, felt pressured into buying before the price goes up!!
I have now learned to think carefully about what I really need for my business. To take a step back and think will this help me or just be another expense I could do without.

Hey Jacs! I think #4 and #7 resonate with advice I’d offer. Take action! stop purchasing products and then complaining the don’t work if you’ve never tried. We should be properly qualifying our purchases in the first place as to avoid the crap! So get on with it! Learn how to use and then actually use it. Great post!
Mys Palmer recently posted..By: myspalmer
Cheers Mys – thanks for reinforcing those points – so many people blame the product after buying, and so often it is the person not utilising it correctly!

The one thing missing in all the previous comments and the post is have the money. I know that some teachers of marketing say it should be the last issue discussed but if you’re a buyer, one of those things we all worry about is if we’re ready to part with however much money something is. If you’re talking about a $1 candy bar that’s one thing; if you’re trying to decide on a $500 PC vs. a $1,350 Mac that’s a major decision. Comfort really helps in decision making, and maybe you just need to save a bit more money before you act in certain situations.
Mitch Mitchell recently posted..Google Authorship – Pretty Cool!
Hi Mitch – having the money available or accessible for your purchase was part of my ‘making a Business Decision’ but I see I was not clear enough on this point – so thank you for pointing it out, as you say, a purchase often should be delated while high priced items are saved up for.
